This is part one in a four-part series, “In the Beginning”. CLICK HERE for all sermons in this series.

God created man, who resided in the Garden of Eden. The serpent tempted the woman, and she gave in to temptation, introducing sin into the world. But God shows us grace by offering us the gift of redemption.

Redemption Defined

PADAH – Redemption of persons or other living beings

"However, if the ox was in the habit of goring, and its owner has been warned yet does not restrain it, and it kills a man or a woman, the ox must be stoned, and its owner must also be put to death. If instead a ransom is demanded of him, he can pay a redemption price for his life in the full amount demanded from him."

Exodus: 21:29-30

GA’AL – Redemption price in family members involving the responsibility of the next-of-kin

"Jeremiah replied, 'The word of the Lord came to me: Watch! Hanamel, the son of your uncle Shallum, is coming to you to say, "Buy my field in Anathoth for yourself, for you own the right of redemption to buy it."'"

Jeremiah 32:6-7

KIPPUR – The covering of sin or the making of atonement for sin

"Yet these cannot redeem a person or pay his ransom to God - since the price of redeeming him is too costly, one should forever stop trying."

Psalm 49:7-8

APOLYTROSIS – A releasing effected by payment of ransom

"We have redemption in Him through His blood, the forgiveness of our trespasses, according to the riches of His grace"

Ephesians 1:7

Redemption Promised

PROMISE: We will have victory over the snake.

"I will put hostility between you and the woman, and between your seed and her seed. He will strike your head, and you will strike his heel."

Genesis 3:15

PROMISE: Our sin is covered by the shedding of blood.

"Adam named his wife Eve because she was the mother of all the living. The Lord God made clothing out of skins for Adam and his wife, and He clothed them."

Genesis 3:20-21

How do we receive the gift of redemption?

"For you know that you were redeemed from your empty way of life inherited from the fathers, not with perishable things like silver or gold, but with the precious blood of Christ, like that of a lamb without defect or blemish."

1 Peter 1:18-19

"I am the living bread that came down from heaven. If anyone eats of this bread he will live forever. The bread that I will give for the life of the world is My flesh."

John 6:51

"Go, therefore, and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit."

Matthew 28:19
